The Josephine Cowl {A free crochet pattern}

 

 

I absolutely love scarves. Fabric and fiber- love them both. For spring and summer, I'm all about a nice cotton gauze scarf, but the winter dictates something more cozy. Something soft.

 

That is where this scarf comes in. Winter has always been a time of tradition for me, and one tradition I must follow is the re-reading of some of my favorite books. One of these books is Little Women. Jo will always be my favorite, and so this comfy cowl is named for her. After you make this cowl {and believe me, it goes fast!}, grab some hot chocolate and your favorite worn book, and snuggle with this easy scarf!

 

 

A couple notes on this scarf: This scarf is crochet in the round. Make sure you don't twist the chains in the beginning when you form the loop. It won't look right.

Also, this is worked in the round. Do not turn work.

 

The scarf uses rows of dc then a few rows of sc. The tighter sc stitch forms rolls when the scarf is put on. It gives the appearance of lots of loops twisted around the neck with the comfort and lightness of only one. Very cool!

 

So, materials needed are:

Chunky weight yarn {6}, like Lion Brand Thick and Quick

The big mama of crochet hooks- a Q {15.75 mm}

scissors

 

 

Abbreviations:

sc------ single crochet

dc------ double crochet

ch------ chain

ss------- slip stitch

 

 

 

To start, ch 40. SS to first ch in row, making sure that the chains are not twisted.

Row 1: Ch .  Dc in the stitch where you ss into and ch 2. Dc in each stitch around. Join with a ss to first dc.  (40 dc)

row 2-4: repeat row 1 (40 dc)

Row 5-6: Ch 1.  sc in stitch where ss and ch 1 was made. sc in each stitch round. (40 sc)

 

*This is essentially the whole pattern. You will repeat these steps 2 more times, making sure that the scarf ends with 1 row of sc.

-So, there will be four rows of 40 dc

-2 rows of 40 sc

-4 rows of 40 dc

-2 rows of 40 sc

-4 rows of 40 dc

-1 rows of 40 sc

 

Fasten off and weave in ends!

That's it!

Adjustable Boot Cuffs Crochet Pattern

It's almost time for fall! Can you feel the crispness in the air? Smell the fires in the fireplaces around your neighborhood, see the leaves falling, hear the rain on your roof?

Neither can I.

I don't know about you, but where I am, it's still hot. I guess fall isn't official until September 21, but once all the kiddos go back to school, I want to be wearing scarves, boots, and ear warmers. I want to be carrying hot pumpkin spice lattes, not iced coffee.

I want to be wearing these boot cuffs.

Well, we might have to wait to wear these, but you don't have to wait to make them! Below is a pattern to whip up however many of these cuties that you want! I especially love these boot cuffs because they are fast to make and adjustable. The buttons on the side make it so most calf sizes can fit these. Hoorah! Make some as holiday presents, make some for yourself. These are quick things to make to sell at craft fairs and festivals.

Okay..so enough with the boring stuff. Let's do this, shall we?

Round up your supplies first:
-Size J crochet hook (6 mm)
-Worsted weight yarn in choice of color
-tapestry needle for weaving in ends
-8 buttons for the sides
-needle and matching thread

{a little note about the yarn: for every pattern I have there is usually a favorite type of yarn that accompanies it. There can be extreme differences in yarn, even when they are in the same weight category. So, for this pattern, my favorites so far have been Lion Brand Vanna's Choice and Hobby Lobby I Love this Yarn. I feel it works up the best. Red Heart Super Saver is a bit too stiff.}

Abbreviations:
ss- slip stitch
ch- chain
dc-double crochet

This pattern consists of shells. A shell is (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same stitch.

With J hook and yarn, ch 52.
Row 1: Shell in fourth ch from hook. *Skip three ch, shell in next ch.* 11 times. Skip three ch, dc in last ch. Ch 3, turn. (you should have twelve shells)
Row 2: Shell in the ch-1 space created from the previous shell (see picture below if you need a reference as to where to do this). Shell in each ch-1 space across. At the end of the row, make a dc in the space where your ch 3 is from the beginning of row 1. (see second picture down below). Ch 3, turn.

 

{see where the pencil is inserted? That is where your ch-1 space is and where you will be doing your shells!}

 

{Now, see where the pencil is inserted? this is the space created by the ch 3 that will begin each row. This is where you make the last dc of the row!}

Row 3-8 : Repeat row 2.
Fasten off and using tapestry needle, weave in ends! Obviously, you will be making two. Unless you like the one cuff look...

Now for the buttons!!
You need four for each cuff. It does not matter which end of the boot cuff you put them on, but it does matter where they get sewed on! I thought pictures would explain the best:

So, you're going to be sewing the buttons here, where the tapestry needle is pointing.:

 

The buttonholes are created by the ch 3 spaces at the end of the rows. You should have four. Again, notice where the tapestry needle is inserted:

 

The buttons and the buttonholes should match up!

 

 

And that's it! Easy, cute, good sellers, on trend... what more could you want? Except maybe a pumpkin spice latte.
